Description
Antique colored photo of English thoroughbred racehorse and sire Persimmon, measures 9 x 7 inches on paper backing measuring 10 x 8 inches, with name penciled at front border and on reverse of backing sheet and photo. The photo is attached to the backing sheet at the four corners with the stamp of photographer Clarence Hailey of New market visible on the photograph reverse.Persimmon's sire was St. Simon with Galopin as grandsire. Perdita II was the dam of Persimmon, with Hampton the damsire. In addition to winning several majors, Persimmon was a leading sire in Britain and Ireland for several years. A Life size statue of him stands at Sandringham Stud and a British locomotive was named in his honor.
Photograph came with a number of horse racing items that belonged to Walter S. Vosburgh, an original member of The Jockey Club, turf historian ( author of American Racing, 1866-1921 etc. ), official handicapper for various racing associations, including New York race tracks from 1894-1934 and for whom the Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park are named.
