    Description

Photo measures 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches on backing board measuring 11 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches. Reverse has penciled notation regarding winning of 1867 Belmont Stakes and lineage.
Ruthless was an American Thoroughbred filly elected to the US Racing Hall of Fame. Sired by Eclipse out of Barbarity she was owned and bred by Francis Morris at his farm in Throgg's Neck, NY. She was the winner of the first Belmont Stakes in 1867 and considered by racing journalist and historian W.S. Vosburgh to be the best three year old of her racing year. Her career record was 7 wins and 4 places in 11 starts.

Vosburgh, an original member of The Jockey Club, turf historian ( author of American Racing, 1866-1921 etc. ), official handicapper for various racing associations, including New York race tracks from 1894-1934 and for whom the Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park are named.
