    Description

Somewhat crudely painted photograph of  Maxim has inked information on reverse- Imported Maxim by Musket, 1st dam Realization by Vespasian, 2nd dam Hopeful Duches by The Flying Dutchman. The photo has the stamp of Geo. D. Stewart, Photographer, 2501 9 Street, Sacramento, Cal. The photo was likely taken at Rancho Del Paso, the horse farm purchased in 1859 by Kames B.A. Haggin, where he bred thoroughbred horses until about 1905.
    Measures 8 x 12 inches including board; image measures approx. 5 x 8 inches.
Photograph came with a number of horse racing items that belonged to Walter S. Vosburgh, an original member of The Jockey Club, turf historian ( author of American Racing, 1866-1921 ), official handicapper for various racing associations, including New York race tracks from 1894-1934 and for whom the Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park are named.
