    Description
A service plate from the now defunct Historic Ebbitt House Washington DC.  Made by Syracuse China prior to 1911.  It measures 10" diameter.  There are no chips or cracks.  A light stain in one area.
The Ebbitt Boarding House was established in 1856 by WM Ebbitt and consisted of four town houses at "F" and 14th Streets, NW, Washington DC.  The original building was demolished in 1872 in order to build the opulent Ebbitt House.
The hotel became known as the "Army and Navy Headquarters".   Prominent guests included General William T. Sherman, Admiral Farragut and General Hancock.  William McKinley stayed at the Ebbitt throughout his congressional career and left from it for his Presidential Inauguration.
The hotel was torn down in 1925 and replaced by the National Press building.  A New Ebbitt House was built at 10th and "H" streets, NW in 1925.  The New Ebbitt House never gained the popularity that the old one had.
