    Description

This is a Pierre Bellocq (Peb) print on heavy stock, from his Peb 71 book of 100 caricatures & comic renderings in 1971.  It measures approx. 14" x 17", and is number 31 out of 100.
This one is a tribute to Mrs. Gene (Lucille) Markey, who was a Calumet Farm owner for 51 years.  Her first husband, Warren Wright, inherited the farm in Lexington in 1931 and transformed it into
the most successful thoroughbred nursery and racing stable in the country.  When he died, she married Gene Markey in 19
52, and they operated Calumet until Mr. Markey's death in 1980.
Calumet's achievements, especially during its greatest years, from 1941 to 1961, were phenomenal.   In those 20 years, it was the leading money-earning stable in the country 12 times. Seven of its colts won the Kentucky Derby: Whirlaway in 1941, Pensive in 1944, Citation in 1948, Ponder in 1949, Hill Gail in 1952, Iron Liege in 1957 and Tim Tam in 1958.
This whimsical view is of Mrs. Markey with hats representing all of their Calumet Derby winners.  It is in very good condition.  The left bottom has a slight diagonal which I tried to capture in the first photo.  It should not detract from the overall print look.  Please look at all photos and ask if any questions.  Thanks for your interest.
