From humble begginings Phar Lap became a great and unforgettable horse. He began his life in New Zealand and went to Australia to be trained as a racehorse. His trainer trained him with the agreement that he would get a percentage of the prize money from races won instead of the usual training fee. This was because he had persuaded David Davis to buy Phar Lap unseen and when he saw the horse he refused to pay to have him trained because he looked so unpromising. Phar Lap went on to become a winner of 37 races out of 51 , he won the Melbourne Cup and the Agua Caliente Handicap and in 1931 won 14 races in a row. In 2008 Scientists came to the conclusion that Phar Lap died from arsenic poisoining in 1932. Arsenic was commonly given as a tonic to race horses at that time.
