    Description

Photograph, likely taken in the early 1930s of a nineteenth century painting or engraving by John Frederick Herring Snr. of racehorse Orlando. The photo  measures 8 1/2 x 6 5/8 inches. Attached to the bottom right of the photo is an inked card stating "Orlando" sire of 1906 Preakness winner "Whimsical". HOWEVER, the image matches Herring's 1844 work and there was another Orlando (1899) who sired  Whimsical  with Kismet. Damsire was Hindoo and Grandsire was Orme.

otograph came with a number of horse racing items that belonged to Walter S. Vosburgh, an original member of The Jockey Club, turf historian ( author of American Racing, 1866-1921 etc. ), official handicapper for various racing associations, including New York race tracks from 1894-1934 and for whom the Vosburgh Stakes at Belmont Park is named.
